Athens Soup Kitchen, located at 421 N. Prairieville St. here in Athens,
TX.
The Soup Kitchen is currently serving every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00 to 1:00 on a "to-go" basis. FPC-Athens
sponsors a week each month starting on the last Tuesday of the month and then the following Thursday. We provide soup, crackers, sandwich, dessert and fruit. We are currently averaging
130 to 160 lunches each day. We usually arrive at the kitchen at 8:00/8:30 to prep. We start each day with three 25 quart pots of soup and 100+ sandwiches. Prep work is chopping
onions, peeling and dicing 10-20 pounds of potatoes, chopping celery and depending on the soup cutting up chicken, sausage, or other meat. Other prep work is packing crackers and desserts for
inclusion in the to-go bags. Additional prep work occurs if the numbers warrant it. There is minimal clean-up involved, prep tools and the soup pots, we are usually out of there by
1:05!
There is a "faithful" crew, however we offer on the job training and would encourage anyone interested in being part
of this ministry to let Sharon Chasey know. We would then be able to split our crew to one for Tuesday, another for Thursday. It would also be helpful to have back-up for our regulars and
to also to get to know and incorporate more of our members.
