Overview
The First Presbyterian Church of Athens was established May
2, 1855, by Rev. Robert Hodges with nine founding members and has
served the Athens area for the last one hundred and fifty years.
First Presbyterian Church has been a positive force for the cause
of Christ in the community. It has also helped to begin many organizations
that help people in this area. First Presbyterian Church members
were instrumental in starting the Food Pantry, the Fuel Fund and Labor
of Love, among others. The church continues to support the Fuel Fund
which is administered through the Help Center. Many church members
volunteer for Labor of Love projects and at the Food Pantry. The
church administers the Christmas Benevolence program which assists
people in the community with food, clothing and toys.
First Presbyterian
offers a Mother’s Day out program on Tuesdays and Fridays which is
a wonderful program at a reasonable cost. During thet third week
of June, the First Presbyterian Church provides Vacation Bible School
for children ages three through fifth grade.
The church presently
offers programs for all age groups. The church offers trips for seniors,
activities for children and young people, and Bible studies for men
and women. The Presbyterian Women are very active. They host the
family night dinners for the congregation and many other programs
for the women of the church. The Presbyterian Men meet monthly for
fellowship over breakfast. They complete service projects for the
church.
First Presbyterian
Church also has an extensive music program ranging from children’s
singing and hand bell choirs to our adult choir. The music program
is under the direction of Mamie Downing.
